Hock Lam Beef Kway Teow

Since i didnt find the dishes i wana try from Miss Clarity, we proceeded over to the other side of Purvis Street to try the supposedly legendary Hock Lam Beef Kway Teow....

Their signboard...

ordered both the soup and dry version.

The soup version with meat balls and sliced beef ($4)....

overall, it was alright but i was not wow-ed. For a legendary name like this, i expected myself to be wow-ed by the taste. However, i wasnt. Not that its not nice but i was just not impressed. Lea also said it tasted ok but it was normal.. like what u can find in food courts. The beef slices were not tender, nothing fantastic about the meat balls. The kway teow was ok also, smooth and soft but thats it.

The dry version ($4).....

i has peanuts by the side.. also with the same sliced beef and beef balls. Comparatively, i found the beef balls and sliced beef in the soup version nicer... it feels like those from the soup version doesnt taste that hard. Duno why this is so since i thot they are supposed to be the same. The soup that came with the dry version also tasted slightly thicker. Not sure if its the same soup for the soup version.

Overall, taste was seriously ok. Its not like its not nice. Just that i was not impressed when i expected to be so i guess it was abit disappointing and unsatisfying.

Was talking to Kelvin later in the night and i complained abit about not being impressed, apparently he said if u ate many pieces of the sliced beef together, den it'll be nice. So i asked wats so special or legendary about this place.. he said its coz their beef is so very thinly sliced. So i didnt understand.. if thats the case den by eating many pieces of it together, wouldnt it defeat the purpose? haha..maybe i dun understand.

The beef noodles are just nice, not really anything special. However, if you compare it with the starch gravy which comes in food courts, this would be noticeably better. There is one beef noodle store at Beach Road hawker centre that serves with a more generous amount of ground peanuts which I find adds alot to the fragrance. I can't remember the store though, so may require some searching.
