Hawker Chan

Ok this came recommended that the Michelin chicken rice is now at toa Payoh, replacing the old Soup Restaurant location (if u know where it is)....

It was relatively packed during lunch hour, you get a seat, queue for food and collect when your number is flashed.

Menu is simple, cut into rice, noodle, hor fan and some combinations. A little strict too in that they can't let u order any combination that's not on the menu. You just got to work it out.

I had the soya chicken roast pork noodle.

I...... cannot get what the craze or star is about. The skin of the roast pork was not crispy. A random kopitiam chicken rice stall might have a better roast pork.

The soya sauce chicken as well. Hmm there's another stall along the alley behind where bossini is, the food there is way much better, even right down to the noodles.

Me so disappointed.

The same thing but with rice. The chup on the rice is quite sweet. I guess it's ok but not nice nice?

Sides of char Siew and pork rib....

YAWNz. It's so lean. Taste was really just ok.

By virtue of this I think imperial treasure or crystal jade should be awarded Michelin stars too!

Wanton soup...

Tasted sweet. :(

Clearly I had a bad experience. I probably won't completely rule this off yet, probably I will try to give their main branch a visit. But yeah this experience was not good.

LFNK

we decided to do dinner around TPY and derrick recommended this chicken rice place that is supposedly quite famous...

the chicken rice..

didnt find the chicken rice really good coz its a bit hard. but on the contrary, kaizhi likes it coz she said she likes her rice hard.

the you ji (soya sauce chicken)...

the you ji was alright. kaizhi commented she found it a bit weird to have the you ji with chicken rice. she felt she should have opted for the noodles instead.

the thai crispy tofu...

decent.

roast pork...

hmmm.. didnt think it was good. not very crispy.

braised pork...

this was pretty good! very fatty but i usually dont take the top part. the meat was good.

dumpling soup...

not very good.

beansprouts...

the beansprouts by itself was good.. but made better coz they gave a generous portion of lard! both sq and i love it! hehe...

Boon Tong Kee

Dinner with Sharleen and her friend Chris at Balestier's Boon Tong Kee

fried you tiao....

the fried you tiao is one of the better ones i've had for a long long while. the outside is crispy and the fillings is yummy. most of the you tiao i've tried so far are too dry.

fried tofu.....

so smooth and soft... quite good!

the chicken...

its not bad. forgot to take a picture of the rice but the rice was just mediocre to me. i prefer maxwell market's chicken rice stall's rice.

fried kai lan....

fresh vegetables.

melon sharks fins soup....

sharleen really likes it. its quite good, almost as good as my mum's.

Chris treated for the meal. thank cute!

Xiang Nan / Nan Xiang

I LOVE CYNTHIA. She's the best.. knowing i may hafta lunch alone, she tasked her girls to come meet me for lunch even though she herself can't make it. haha.. She's really such a dear! *MUACKS*

Lunch was with Xinying, Ferlyn and Shujun.. and they came all the way down to Novena to meet me. Thank cute babes!

We had lunch @ Xiang Nan or is it Nan Xiang? anyway, its this shop...

I remember walking by one day wif stella a few weeks back when we wanted to go buy QQ rice ball and we were both walking silently until we walked past this shop and we turned to each other in unison and said " ji fan "... haha.. coz it smells so goood!

the four of us ordered a set meal for 4, comes wif soup......

the soup is pretty good, quite tasty!

sweet and sour pork....

quite mediocre.

and the interesting thing is, they haf chicken rice ball! the 3 ladies all tried the chicken rice ball....

the rice ball....

and since they had the ball, i went for the normal rice...

i do wana try the ball (hehe.,.,. can pick from them) but i just haf this feeling that the typical rice will taste better. Maybe its just a psychology thing! heh

and the chicken!

its quite good.. not fantastic but i'd say above average? Xinying said Ken can cook better... Xinying, we are waiting!!

and the not interesting vegetables..

The set was $39.90. Worked out to ard $10 per person. A lil steep in pricing for chicken rice.

Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice

I've been meaning to check out the much raved about tian tian hainanese chicken rice at maxwell market. and since our manicure session with cyndi is just around the area, we decided to proceed there. I remember i love the chicken rice from Dong Fong Fa Hainanese Chicken Rice (also located within Maxwell Market)... later when i heard raves about Tian Tian, i was under the impression its the same stall, only to realise its not. So i'm quite excited to find out which one i'd prefer.

Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice...

our orders....

they had this side dish called the cuttlefish with beansprout....

its only $3 for a relatively big plate. This dish is nice! The cuttlefish's texture is good and goes well with the beansprouts. The beansprouts were slightly crunchy and the sauce was probably the chicken rice sauce. Yummy!

and a close up of the rice....

i wasnt exactly impressed by the rice. Although i gotta admit the last time i had rice from Dong Fong Fa was quite a long while ago, i'm still under the impression that Dong Fong Fa's rice is much more fragrant. Of coz, this is just my personal opinon.

the chicken...

a closer up view...

i personally find the chicken pretty on par for Dong Fong Fa and Tian Tian. Both were really tender and smooth. Yummmy yummy.

Local Delights - Chicken Rice Balls

It was located at the same coffeeshop where Erica likes their chao ta bee hoon...

Boon Hwa Food Centre, located right opposite Sim Lim Tower.

This is the stall...

Ahhh.. finally! It tastes... ok. the rice is slightly more sticky den the normal one but the taste is more or less the same. I was kinda expecting more.. i though chicken rice ball would mean the chicken is also rubbed into the ball.. haha.. turned out it seems to be like the normal chicken rice.. Not sure if the other chicken rice ball stall's ones are the same... but overall, its not bad. Costs $3.60.... they're selling normal chicken rice at $3. Worth a try.
