The Oasis

We've been meaning to bring my mum and jim poh to Oasis for the porridge after jim poh's explicit hints...haha.. its been said that this place might be closed down in December so maybe thats why Jim Poh really wants to revisit this place....

This place really brings back memories. We used to visit this place quite a bit when we were much younger. I have quite a couple of pictures of myself taken with this stone lion tucked in my childhood photo album...

the oasis....

this place always reminds me of the 80s... and not sure if its because its taiwan porridge, i'd always be reminded of chin han and lin tsing xia. haha

the entrance...

it was a sunday afternoon and packed with people....

business was so good we had to wait 15 mins, get rejected by about 3 - 4 servers before finally getting a menu so that we could order.

the nostalgic tea cups!

the taiwan porridge are served in containers like these and theres a trolley for each table...

the porridge with sweet potato...

for dishes, we ordered the following:

century egg with floss and tofu....

the taste is alright (reminds me a little of the pi dan tofu @ shunjuu) but the texture of the century egg is a bit too hard...... or so called, rubbery.

pig intestine and preserved vegetable..

the pig intestine was really good. Its really clean w/o the foul smell. The preserved vegetable was also nice.

salted fried chicken...

Really crispy and quite tender. nice.

fresh cockles....

mummy loved it .. i had to stop her from having too much. Goes well with the chilli they provide. I personally prefer Pu Tien's but this one is more convenient to eat w/o the shells.

sea cucumber claypot...

which i didnt try coz i dun take sea cucumber.

the lu rou...

which was nice.

the steamed minced meat wif salted egg...

i find it ok, not particularly good. in fact, the yummy steamy's food court version seems to taste better.

the chilli heng chai....

pretty ok as well.

the stewed beancurd....

i kinda liked it. its tasty.

the chicken feet...

which was not bad.

Jim poh's favourite chai por neng....

which was quite nicely fried.

our table full of food....

overall, dishes were ok. i wun say its wow but it sure does brings back nostalgic feelings. heh

and as we asked for the bill, the server came to promote their mooncakes to us...

the box is quite special.. its in octagon shape, following the shape of the oasis. We were given samples to try. it was ok... i mean, i dun really go for baked mooncakes. the rest said it was ok. the selling factor, was the price. It costs $10 only for 2 mooncakes (one double yolk, one w/o yolk). Each box also comes with a $8 voucher (valid till 10th oct i think, min purchase of $30). So effectively, one box is only $2! cheap cheap!

we got 3 boxes... n mummies, being aunties, are a bit hard to please. haha.. so there was quite a commotion in the selection of the mooncakes but all went well eventually.

Previously, a couple of weeks back when i came by to check out the contact details of oasis, i took these pics of the place which i thot looks much nicer den those taken today...probably because it was taken in the evening.

the lion statue...

there has been many comments on oasis in forums and the place is always crowded though the food isnt tt great. guess the fact tt it's restaurant-on-water plays a part too!

i wana bring my grandpa to try them but i dunnoe if it will be too exp! :)

hihi...
im not sure of the exact cost but probably ard $120 - $130 for 5 pax. It really isnt cheap to be honest.

food wise, it wasnt wowing. it was alright but we went mainly coz of the nostalgic feel it gives us.

if u're bringing ur grandpa, u may want to consider pu tien instead. i personally think that is a better restaurant. =)
