What was meant to be a simple dinner with Jeremy at our favourite bak chor mee stall turned out to be quite an extravagant affair because we eventually ended up at Raffles Hotel's Doc Cheng's....
the place was quite quiet.
the interior of the place....
the decor of the place has a strong oriental influence.. very much reminds me of opium den days with a rustic yet posh feel.
we were first served the naan and yoghurt....
as usual, im not really a flour person so the naan, while it was ok to me, was very nice to jeremy. the very friendly server who served us told us dat he personally likes it as well and a lot of the guests also likes it. in all honesty, it was not bad, especially the slightly charred parts.
we went for the 3 course set dinner, $68 each. The 3 course set meal came with choice of 1 appetizer sampler, 1 main course & 1 dessert.
the appetizer sampler means we can select 3 out of their 9 listed appetizers to create the sampler. The list is as follows, categorised into Cold, Fried and Steamed.
Appetizer
Cold
Thai Jumbo Prawns - Foie Gras Summer Roll
Ahi Tuna / Scallop Tartare
Lemon Grass Blinis Barbecued Beef
Fried
Curried Cumin Crab Cakes
Blue Shrimp / Seasonal Vegetable Tempura
Tandoori Baby Quail
Steamed
Chestnut Custard
Braised Chinese Cabbage / Minced Pork
Vietnamese Rice Paper Chicken Dumpling
My appetizer sampler!
i went for the Thai Jumbo Prawns - Foie Gras Summer Roll, Braised Chinese Cabbage / Minced Pork and Blue Shrimp / Seasonal Vegetable Tempura....
the foie gras summer roll was pretty good though i couldnt really taste the foie gras. the tempura was also quite good, saltish and good.
the cabbage with minced pork was also nice... felt delicate. haha
Jeremy's sampler.....
he went for the Vietnamese Rice Paper Chicken Dumpling, Curried Cumin Crab Cakes and Ahi Tuna / Scallop Tartare....
although everything was just bite sized, we still did try to share everything.. his crab cakes was nice! the chicken dumpling as recommended by the server was good too.
for mains, jeremy went for the sesame duck breast and kaffir lime duck leg with curried asian mushroom...
it was pretty good! The sauce was good and the duck was tender. Jeremy really liked it.
and i duno why i forgot to take a picture of my salmon main. Must have been too engrossed with the conversation. Mine was the char-grilled roasted marinated salmon with indian spices, tomato-mascarpone orzo and spinach leaves. The salmon was specially requested to be medium done so its done just right. i especially loved the spinach and the orzo.. the orzo is a type of pasta shaped somewhat like pinenuts.. the sauce went very well with the orzo.. yummmmmmy!
for desserts, jeremy chose some chocolate cake with hazelnut crust....
a closer up view....
the vanilla ice cream dat came along with it was really good. Jeremy really liked it. the cake was also good.. the crust seemed to be thin yet impactful. haha
mine was some coffee ice cream with some pudding like dessert....
it looks refined.. tastes alright but wasnt awesome.
the doc cheng's experience was generally good. the service was excellent.. the head server muraly also came to speak to us and he made us feel very comfortable and welcome. We mentioned the good service given by the other server Alex as well and he prompted us to send an email to compliment the server which i eventually did.
