Pu Tien (Xing Hwa)

After work, i took a cab to pick up my parents and we met up wif ah yee, uncle sq and jim poh for dinner at Pu Tien (Xing Hwa) Restaurant along Kitchener Road. This place was strongly recommended to me by Alison and her husband when i bumped into them the other day at Food For Thought. They said its a good place for families.

also, aside from Alison, subsequently i've heard other pretty good reviews about this place.. In fact, even my parents have heard of this place but just never made time to come down. also, point to note is there is more den one Pu Tien along this stretch.. but only one is the original. Even the taxi driver said that. One is the original one the other is much more pricey... the taxi driver joked saying its to tok lang one. haha.. i wouldn't koe coz i've never tried it... but u gotta admit that taxi drivers know where all the good food are.

so we arrived...

127-129 Kitchener Road
Tel: 6295 6358
Hours:noon to 3pm, 6 to 11pm

and when i got there, looking at the crowd, we were wondering to ourselves.. " today mothers' day meh? "

its pretty amazing how this place isnt exactly very accessible or around town etc.. but there was still so much crowd! everyone really game in groups of families... small families, big families. Well, this, at least gave me a booster of assurance that the food most probably is really good. And thank god i made reservations, we had seats pretty fast....

i did some online research and thanks to Food.Recentrunes.Com, i knew what to order....

we had the cockles with garlic....

a close up view....

mum, dad, jim poh and myself loved it! the cockles were fresh and together with the garlic, it was a great combi. Dad actually praised this dish.

we also the combination platter ($38)...

it comes with fried century eggs....

this item is nice and its something different.. ah yee said its really nice. haha..

and the octopus....

which was nice.

the spring roll was decent...

this is the jelly fish....

or at least i thought it tasted like jelly fish. the typical jelly fish we haf is usually in strands and looks jelly-ish but this one is in pieces. now i finally understand what Alison means when she said they serve things that are different from outside.

the pork belly....

it was very thinly sliced, not too fat but tastes great!

the pig trotters... ($2.50 per piece, minimum of 4 pieces)....

i couldnt really take it, the pork smell was too strong for me. one bite and i had to give up my piece. but mum n jim poh loved it. in fact they loved it so much we ta bao a pack home for them to share.

the homemade beancurd...

it was really really good. Very very smooth and soft! Uncle sq upon one bite went.. " zhe ge toufu hao chi! " it was also mum's favourite dish for tonight.

and we also ordered a small lor mee to share ($4)...

the lor mee is not the typical type where its with black sauce. the sauce is white. it tastes quite good i'd say and mum insists that we all add vinegar to it coz she said it tastes nicer that way. haha.. actually it tastes good with or without vinegar in my opinon.

the spinach cooked with salted egg and century egg...

i particularly like this dish. to begin with, i typically like spinach. and i felt its interesting that they cook it with salted egg and century egg.

the squirrel fish....

reminds me of the one i had with nuasters the other time at Bei Fang Feng Wei... so yes nuasters, maybe we can come here one day as well. but actually, in comparison i kinda prefer Bei Fang Feng Wei's squirrel fish.. it was more crispy.

and we also had a bamboo herbal prawns....

it was supposed to be served in a bamboo tube but dad gave permission to seperate it for us coz the table was filled with plates already so end up i didnt manage to take a pic of the bamboo tube. this dish is decent and is the usual herbal soup.

the xing hwa bee hoon....

this dish is quite nice! i especially liked the crispy seaweed by the side, goes really well with the bee hoon!!

and the yam with duck....

the top part was yam and the duck at the bottom...

it was not bad.

we also had a bamboo clam soup...

this is probably the only wrong order for the night. not dat it tastes horrible but its definitely not nice. i did notice a couple of other interesting soup which we can order on our next visit. and yes, i believe we are coming back. for that price and the quality of food, there is no reason not to be back.

dessert wise, we shared some pumpkin dessert, didnt quite catch the name....

it comes with ice cream and some chopped nuts. It was really pretty good.

the whole dinner came up to around $257 with an additional combination platter to go for my granny at home.
