Canton Wok

Celebrating mummy's birthday at Canton Wok. Dear dear had recommended the place.

382 Joo Chiat Road
Tel: 62856919/63486919

When we drove in, this man wearing his chef uniform was signalling to us where to park. Its only when we got down dat we realised that man is Chef Kang himself. Very friendly looking man...

the interior of the place....

while waiting for ah yee to arrive, took some pics.

The menu....

The starters was some beancurd thingy.. cut into cubes... its kinda mixed wif some sweet and chilli sauce.. its very nice! we kinda finished around 4 dishes while waiting for ah yee to arrive...

and the server kinda overheard dat we're celebrating mum's bday so he served us complimentary shou tao...

i thot dat was a very nice gesture!

we ordered black pepper lotus roots ($12)....

its very nice! very crispy! in fact it doesnt quite taste like lotus roots.. the sauce is a lil sweet as i recall, not very pepperish.. and the spring onions went well wif the dish.

served on the same plate was this dish....

which i dun recall ordering and the server said something which i didnt catch so i really duno wat it is... but anyway, it was pretty good.. served wif salad below.

one thing i realised after going thru the menu is that the dishes they haf are pretty creative. like i noticed they had a strawberry pork ribs! But we didnt order that. We went for the double taste pork ribs ($20)...

Comes with coffee pork ribs...

which was ok. kinda sweet but i dun really like it. i mean all along, i dun think i've tried any coffee pork ribs dat really made an impression for me to like them. ah yee preferred this better to the fruit juice one though.

fruit juice pork ribs.....

i preferred this to the coffee one. Ah yee found this too sweet for her liking though. But overall, it is noted that their pork was pretty tender.

den recommended was the deep fried brinjal ($12)...

a closer up view...

the individual piece...

its probably one of their signature dishes. I didnt quite like it coz its quite dry so doesnt taste like how the usual brinjal tastes. The pork floss dat comes wif it has a bit of a spicy taste similar to the mami noodle snack we used to eat when we were young. To give it credit, the brinjal was quite crispy. Maybe it just didnt go well wif me.

Recommended by the server was this duck cooked wif yam paste dish dat was not on the menu....

a closer up view...

its actually quite fragrant and taste wise its not bad. Quite unique a dish. i'd say the chef is quite creative. this dish according to the server is very popular.

we also ordered the steamed crab with glutinous rice and garlic ($30 for 1 crab)....

its again another pretty unique and creative dish. uncle sq loved the glutinous rice and we all agreed its very tasty. the crab was ok.. kinda small.

another of their signature dish is baked crab in white cream sauce ($38)..

comes with man tou to dip the sauce....

i personally felt the sauce tasted better wif the man tou den the crab. also another dish dat u probably dun see around.

venison wif i think its si ji dou...

the venison is kinda hard.. the si ji dou was good.

the hot plate prawns...

mum had wanted this other prawn dish. she wanted another one which is also served on hot plate but its a red wine prawn dish. somehow some miscommunication and we were given this. this is some butter prawn like dish. and we ordered a medium... couldnt finish coz jim poh doesnt take butter.. and we were pretty full..

and the mian sian considering its mum's birthday...

its prawns mian sian. i found it just ok, uncle sq said its very nice. haha

Dinner came up to around $260 for 6.

Ahh yes, Canton Wok. I've dined at Chef Kang's restaurant all the way from his previous previous location in Tiong Bahru, previous location in Upper Serangoon and now currently at Joo Chiat. You have to try the porkchops with portuguese sauce one day.

Another plus point is that they don't charge for corkage if you bring your own wine =D
