Central

Lunch was with jo at parkway. We went to Central for lunch. Been wanting to try their fried rice. Saw it featured on tv some time ago and Diane and Leoie highly recommended it.

The interior of Central....

Central's menu...

i ordered the 3 style eggs fried rice....

basically, like the san dan zhou i usually eat, it includes egg, salted egg and preserved egg....

Jo and i find the rice very tasty. But the funny thing is i couldnt quite taste the preserved egg and salted egg.

Jo ordered the cheese baked rice with chicken chop....

she mentioned this is adrien and her favourite. Their cheese baked rice is really yummy.

Sushi Tei

Dinner wif dearest Jo @ Sushi Tei.

the interior of sushi tei...

our orders....

salmon with 3 kinds of smelt roe....

this salmon dish was not bad

cuttlefish and fermented beans.....

i like cuttlefish generally and i ordered this mainly to try how the fermented beans taste. Its very very sticky.. kinda grossed out by how sticky they are.

the fried tofu...

jo and i both agreed their fried tofu is not very nice be it in terms of the taste or texture.

the crab mayo handroll...

was pretty good. good enuff for jo to order 2 of it.

soft shell crab...

jo thot it was not bad, i didnt quite like it.

Hogs Breath

Dinner with my family at Hogs Breath....

everyone had prime rib (which i forgot to take a picture of) except mum.

mum had the dory fish wif prawns in honey sauce...

a closer up view of the prawns...

the honey sauce didnt go very well with me but mum had no complains. The prime rib still didnt taste warm... would haf liked it better if its warm.

we shared a apple crumble as dessert...

they all agreed its very nice. Granny who refused to eat her prime rib went for this.

ABOF

Dinner with lil bee. Dinner was at ABOF. Its actually lil bee's post bday treat. Heard about this place around new year when lionel and myself were surfing for a place to go, we read about it from this blog. its scandinavian cuisine. Sounds interesting so decided to bring lil bee there. ABOF is located at millenia walk....

when we got there, we were like the only table around. i teased lil bee asking if he has the feeling i booked the whole place to give him a treat. hahhaa... it was only subsequently that one other table of people came in.

the interior...

Their menu...

we ordered a traditional scandinavian soup to share.

its got meatballs...

it very much reminded me and lil bee of the vegetable soup with bak chor our mums cook at home. haha.. its nice.

we shared a Best Friends Platter...

its a platter of a number of items that are all cold dishes.

it comprises of... oyster shooters...

the oyster...

the curry herring....

this was alright.

pink shrimp with cavier and egg...

taste was mild.

roast beef....

found it ok.. the beef taste was not strong maybe because its a cold dish.

liver pate with bacon....

the pate is nice! goes well with the bacon.

the scrambled egg with salmon ...

another view....

the eggs didnt have much of a taste.. taste was mainly that of the smoked salmon.

The bread dat came with it....

overall a rather light meal. taste was overall ok. will probably wana try their other items.

Western Barbeque

Lunch at Kallang Old Airport market...

i had the western barbeque...

ordered the mixed grill replacing my lamb to fish...

this place is famous for their sauce.. their garlic sauce. the chicken was pretty good.. kinda juicy and tender. the pork was very thin and average in taste. fish was also around average. Also comes with an egg, baked beans, fries and a bun.

I couldnt finish my fries, baked beans and bun. Sorina kept telling me the bun is very nice must eat must eat.. in the end i let her finish it up for me....

the inside is cream not butter.

Nam Sing Hokkein Mee

Lunch at Kallang Old Airport market with Sean, Stephanie and Sorina.

sorina ordered the nam sing hokkein fried mee....

the mee....

not bad i'd say.

Raffles City Food Junction Fish Soup

Also bought a bowl of fish soup (mixture of sliced fish and fried fish) to share...

pales in comparison to our SIM megabites one. =( The fried fish in this stall is quite thin.

Raffles City Food Junction San Dan Zhou

Dinner at the Raffles City Food Court. I had a san dan zhou again! haha.. is this flavour of porridge getting more popular or is it coz i've never noticed it?

this san dan zhou is not bad. It comes with minced meat but the minced meat had minimal taste. In comparison, the haig road market porridge tastes better and of coz, cheaper.

Monday, January 22, 2007

Ichiban Boshi

Dinner at Ichiban Boshi (Parkway parade).

Tuna and spring onion handroll...

ordered this coz the tuna and spring onion reminded me of waraku's minced tuna rice. this handroll tasted alright but i still miss my waraku.

another item was this..

ordered this coz its like sushi but w/o the rice. Suits me great coz sushi rice to me is like wastage of stomach storage space. =p

I ordered chawanmushi.. their chawanmushi was alright...

inn leng had a cha soba which looked pretty alright. (forgot to take pic). Portion looked good as well.

Haig Road Market

Lunch was at Haig Road Market.. and hee hee hee.... i had the san dan porridge again!

i think the aunty can recognise me already. haha!

Donut Factory

Bought a box of donuts for seafoodies' jan gathering....

the flavours which i didnt try the previous time was the spicy cheese and double chocolate.

not sure if its coz this is pre-packed, the spicy cheese flavour didnt have a strong flavour.

The double chocolate was pretty good though. Comes with chocolate filling!

Papi

Seafoodies jan gathering was at Papi.

We were first served a basket of bread....

the girls seemed to love it especially crabby and squiddy.

as most of us were pretty full, we ordered a pasta and a pizza to share.

the seafood linguine in basil sauce...

pretty nice in terms of freshness and fragrance.

pizza wise, i highly recommended the pamma ham which squiddy seconded....

today's pizza tasted a bit different. Not lousy but different.

Helio Cafe

Headed over to Helio to look for lea and was very lucky to see Chef Clement around....

And clement was showing us the size of the portobello mushrooms he brought in...

HUGE!

and he was very nice to let us try a bit of the mushroom soup he cooked....

a closer up view...

Its without cream.. made up of portobello, shitake, white buttons, brown buttons. We were pretty impressed! and best thing is, its w/o cream.. means its healthy and low fat!

Also, tried the green tea mochi cheesecake that Lea had raved to me about....

a closer up view of it....

its thumbs up! Its the texture thats wooo! imagine the chewy mochi and the cheesecake texture... mmmm mmm!!

Azabu Sabo

Lunch with Ailian. We went to try out Azabu Sabo (Marina Square level 1).

The interior of the place..

their menu..

the green tea they serve was pretty good!

kinda reminds me of the Guan Yin Wang tea that mum has at home. Fragrant in smell and a very sweet after taste.

For mains, i had a cheese burger steak set...

The starter was some sourish carrots and lotus roots (which Ailian liked)...

Options were given for the rice.. if i recall correctly there was some plum rice, some pork rice and something else i cant recall and this salmon sushi rice roll...

a closer up view...

but its didnt taste extraordinary. I mean, u probably can more or less imagine how it tastes.

the soup was light but not bad.. its got thread like egg in the soup...

and of coz the mains which was pretty good i'd say!

the sauce was called demiglace which was quite yummy.

a closer view of the burger steak.....

beef patties nowadays dun seem to impress me but this was is good! Ailian agrees as well.

Ailian had a chicken and crab in soya bean milk item...

its actually some thin kway teow like noodle. The soup for this dish is WOW! I'm serious! Its VERY GOOD! Ailian and myself were both.. WOW-ed by it! Yummy!

What i didnt like was that their crab meat was those frozen artifical crab meat. But the chicken was pretty tender. Definitely will order this dish again when i return. However, this dish is not on their regular menu. Hope they don't remove this item from the menu.

ailian has this thing for sweet potates. We shared a caramelised sweet potato and japanese rice cakes with sesame ice cream (the caramelised won me over and the ice cream wise, choice of green tea flavour was also available)...

Kinda abit too sweet for my liking especially the rice cake.

Haig Road Market

Lunch at Haig Road market.

I had the san dan zhou again!

i think im gonna be having quite a bit of this for my lunch. its good! Realised that Keith is actually quite a corriander fan. he looked so disappointed when he saw me remove the corriandor on my porridge on the table. haha..

lil bee had wanton hor fun...

not sure if its nice but since he didnt wow to me and didnt complain, it should be just alright.

Chocolat N' Spice

Got home and i saw a Chocolat N' Spice bag. Its from ah yee! She had called me earlier today saying she'll bring it to my place. I had previously told her that Jianhe kinda said this place's muffin is very good but apparently theres long queues for it. Not quite sure where it is located exactly.. only vaguely koe its around tanjong pagar and ah yee went to get it for me! yay! so nice right?

She got me 2 muffins!

One is a banana flavoured one.. one has some almond or something...

the inside of the muffin...

didnt wow me like i thot it would. Ah yee said she tried the blueberry one and it didnt work for her either. But den again, maybe coz when i tried it, i was very full already.

Swissbake - Brownie Cheesecake

brownie cheese cake....

for dar dar, with love from nuasters...

the cake tastes so so good! Its very light, doesnt make u feel gerlard. Also, the brownie cubes on top has got nuts inside. Mmm mmm..... Even loh gong zai who doesnt really goes for cake stuff was impressed and had 2 slices!

The Caffe Bar

Dinner at The Caffe Bar celebrating Dar's birthday.

mushroom soup...

the yummyilicious mushroom soup is probably the best soup on their menu.

Jo-ann's order of the set meal came with soup of the day which is probably cream of chicken....

the chicken soup was forgettable. Nothing impressive. Pretty average.

The seafood soup.....

its not nice at all. I won't order it.. and its ridiculous for a $7 plus soup to be not nice.

the ham, cheese and egg sandwich...

the egg was like a poached egg....

Mmmm! But the bread was kinda hard and didnt go for me.

the caesar salad...

pretty average except that the egg was really soft!

Kendi ordered the salmon for her mains....

its pretty unique. Its a ring of salmon on top of a layer of black .. hmm.. u koe the kinda rice we have as a chinese dessert? Orr chok bee? But its not sweetened. On the top is some cabbage like vege.

Dar had a seafood spaghetti aglio olio style...

Jiamiao ordered a roast chicken leg with mushroom linguine dish...

also tastes pretty good. Its in cream based. The funny thing was when we tried to psycho her into ordering something, her reply was.. " im not dean hor " hahaha.. which cracked us all up coz its true.. we usually 'bully' deanie into ordering things that we wana eat. hahahaha

and under my recommendation, andy zai and loh gong zai also had the duck confit... today's duck confit looked like its a bit over burnt...

The inside of it...

Still good. Loh gong zai said that Bakerz Inn has a similiar dish that tastes better. I've never tried it thou.

Jo-ann's dish was a chicken dish. some chicken wrap like dish. Its that same orr chok bee rice wraped around in chicken thigh meat...

a closer up view..

The sauce was cream sauce and again, i thot this is a pretty interesting variety. Taste wise was not too bad in my view as well. But Jo-ann didnt quite like it.

Raymond had the crayfish pasta...

didnt manage to try it.

Dar dar paid for the meal.

Sakae Sushi

Lunch with Dar, Andy zai and Jo. They chose Sakae Sushi for lunch.

Soft shell crab handroll...

some salmon sushi...

Chawanmushi....

some fried silver fish i ordered thinking it was like the crispy fried shrimps from the fish market but this one is not nice..

some chicken with cheese on top thingy...

fried tofu....

Fried salmon head...

while the dishes didnt exactly taste bad.. it wasnt exactly nice either. I felt its quite a waste of money. Not sure if its because my standards have raised or sakae's standards has dropped. I used to think sakae was pretty good but now i think its probably average or even below average. I really wun wana head back again if i can help it.

Garden Confectionary

Granny's birthday cake.

Huge mango cake...

not a mango lover but my family commented the mango used was very fresh.

Haig Road Market

Lunch at haig road market. i had a san dan zhou....

San dan meaning 3 eggs. It includes egg, salted egg and preserved egg. Pretty yummy! The porridge itself is quite tasty!

Tuesday, January 16, 2007

The Caffe Bar

Dinner was at The Caffe Bar (Parkway Parade level 1)...

the interior of the place...

the menu...

Their mushroom soup.. costs around $7 i think... very expensive for a soup if u ask me but its really good....

a closer up view..

it was thick and yummy! Pretty rich and tasty! Mmmm...

For mains, we had a duck confit.....

comes with potato...

i strongly recommended this dish to both. Vreniz thot its rather special and not usually available elsewhere. Its really good except it can be quite oily. Jo was digging into the potatoes.

We also shared a seafood pasta aglio olio style...

it was not bad but i remember the last time i was here with lil bee, it was much nicer.

And since it was vreniz's birthday celebration, naturally we had cakes. Had a strawberry shortcake and Jivara.

Strawberry shortcake....

the raspberry on the cake didnt look fresh actually.

And Jivara....

Both cakes are actually available at Bakerzinn. They are under the same management.

Jerry's BBQ and Grill

Dinner with Dar.

Dar chose Jerry's BBQ and Grill at Tanglin Mall...

The interior of the place....

their menu....

they also have a salad bar which we didnt try because there didnt seem to be much variety.....

i duno why... but i just felt like drinking. it was happy hour so i ordered 2 glasses of red wine....

im no wine expert but i didnt find their red wine very nice.. maybe its not chilled enuff for me. haha..

We shared a buffalo wings thats supposed to be one of their speciality, they had different levels of spiciness. We went for the moderate one.....

a closer up view of the wings...

i didnt quite like the taste coz its too spicy for my liking but the chicken was actually tender and juicy. The white sauce in the centre was actually blue cheese sauce though! Loved that!

for mains, i ordered a fillet mignon....

a closer up view....

requested for it to be done medium rare...

Was not bad. Not fantastic but good enuff.

Dar ordered their cheese burger....

the inside of it...

i thot the cheese burger was rather dull in taste. It tasted boring to me, not much of a taste.

Kai San

Lunch at Kai san (Raffles Hotel).

the interior of the place....

the starter....

ordered a set and it came wif sashimi that i felt was not as fresh as i thot it would be. Im not saying its not fresh but its definitely not very fresh. Cant see any shine.. instead.. u can see a matt like surface and taste the fridgeration part (not sure if u get what i mean)..

den i also tried fish sperm....

i think the fish sperm is one of their specials. Its served somewhat cold, not much of a taste actually.

and the reason why im down here is kinda because of the fish liver....

it didnt taste like what i thot it would taste like but den this is my first time trying fish liver so im not saying that to suggest that this is no good. It tastes a bit like fish roe actually. Those cooked ones but a slightly different texture.

i also had uni (now u koe why i said i felt like i've had alot of sperm today?)....

the uni also didnt strike me as being very fresh. I was quite disappointed.

the tempura were ok...

the grilled salmon was also just alright....

the grilled beef from us.. it was really tender so i kinda liked it...

A close up view...

Dun think theres anything here that would make me wana head back here again.

Ikea

We were all hungry so we headed for dinner first. I was reminded of a few sundays ago.. when i was home and made to finish a rather awful packet of bak chor mee .. and when i read Lionel's blog, i saw, a box of ikea meatballs staring straight into my face... sheer agony.

but... hur hur hur hur....

YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM! I think i've been to Ikea so many times (and probably so have u) that these meatballs don't need reviews. Everyone who've tried it, knows.. its YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM! haha

Ooi had the salmon.....

the salmon is probably the only dish at ikea i dun particularly go for. Its just .. i personally don't find it very good... though not lousy.

ah yee and uncle sq had some grilled chicken and fried rice thingy.. was a daily special...

A closer view of the chicken.....

the fried rice is buttered rice.. quite nice in my view.

and chicken wings!

ikea's chicken wings are also yummy! But today's didnt taste as good. Not sure if its coz it was not hot.

Summer House Donuts

Some forum people alerted that theres this donut place at Burlington Square. And seeing that Donut Factory's queue ain't gonna get shorter any time soon, i decided to give Summer House a try.

I called in to do a preorder (just in case there are people like me looking for alternatives to Donut Factory).

So yeah.. Summer House at Burlington Square...

the interior of the place....

the box.....

their donuts are packed standing up....

i bought a dozen and flavours are as per below....

kinda lazy to go into details. The donut flavours can be found on their website www.summerhousedonut.com .

I didnt manage to try all the flavours either. My favourite was the hazelnut almond where its creamy hazelnut with diced almonds. The taste is good with a strong hazelnut taste that worked well for me.

the strawberry shortcake was also great. The pink icing on top tasted like strawberry pocky and the filling was not just strawberry jam. There were big bites of the strawberry inside.

the rainbow bright kinda appealed to me withe the bright appearance. Taste wise, it was pretty sweet... a little too sweet actually.

their sugar glaze was also uber sweet. too sweet for my liking.

the summer cookie was nt too bad.

Overall, the donuts (not referring to the taste of the toppings) were comparatively harder den Donut Factory's. Probably close to Dunkin's? While its not fantastic, its good when i have a craving for donuts i guess.

Buko Nero

Buko Nero. I've heard quite a bit about this place.. from lil bee, from lea, from mummy gorzilla (elica) etc. Mainly its about how hard it is to get reservations from this place. Apparently its so so good that they don't do walk-ins at all and reservations are at least 1 - 2 months in advance. Wow!

Thanks to Lionel, we managed to get reservations for this place....

Before i got there, when i called Kelvin who had arrived earlier, he had already told me over the fone that pictures are not allowed. So at the entrance, i merely took a picture of their sign and immediately, the lady walked out to infm me that no pictures are allowed. =p

As we got in and had our seats, i requested for another chair to place my bag only to be informed that they do not offer any chairs or stools for bags. Hmm.. ok....

I happened to have a bottle of pokka lychee tea with me so naturally i placed it on the table while i placed my bag behind my back. The lady came over asking me to put it away. I understood the fact that restaurants don't allow outside drinks and i wasnt planning to drink it there. But there was no place for me to place it. After awhile, the lady came over again to talk to me about the lychee tea bottle. She said i might wana place it into my bag or something. My bag is obviously too small for the bottle and i seriously am not sure how she wants me to hide my bottle so i allowed her to take it away. I mean where else? I cannot be placing the bottle with my bag behind my back or on the floor right? But yes, i do understand where they are coming from.

so we sat on for awhile and tried to order, we were informed that they had to follow the timing of reservations so they had to take the orders of another table first. So we waited which was expected coz Lea and Jack who had been there previously had warned me about the wait. I'm not sure if its just me but i felt that in terms of tone and attitude, the lady wasnt very polite during the pokka, stools and ordering events that we spoke to her. I dun mean shes rude but its the tone of voice.. it didnt feel nice or friendly. I was quite uncomfortable with that but along the way, as the dinner went on, she did get slightly nicer and i did notice she was on much friendlier terms with the other tables so maybe its coz its our first time and she doesnt really know us? Or maybe she was not happy that i didnt put away the pokka lychee tea? I duno... or maybe im too sensitive.

I ordered the set meal with comes with beef carpaccio with pomelo and lemon dress, pumpkin crab meat and mint soup, mango and lime sherbet, rigatoni with sausage and mushroom raco, milk chocolate and coconut cake gula melaka coulis. The set meal costs $36. Options were given to change the main course to a few items that were not on the menu. I sticked to my main course of the rigatoni with sausage and mushroom raco while Kelvin and Lionel who also ordered the set meal, changed their main course to Beef wrapped with bacon and blueberries (a top up of $16... Kelvin was totally depressed after hearing the price). Lea and Jack ordered ala carte items of the mushroom soup and the cod fish and steak.

we were first served a small barrel like container with warm bread with olive oil.

Before our meal started, the lady also came and offered us an appetiser saying its compliments from chef oscar. It was like a mini crispy bread below layered by a green round layer den layered with tomato and a smaller round egg tofu item. it looked quite delicate and it was pretty good! thank cute chef oscar.

Lionel and Kelvin also shared a Tau Kwa Tower ($16.50). They both felt very disappointed with the tau kwa tower coz the tau kwa was just a thin square layer below with some mixed vege on top. It was ok but i guess the price doesnt justify but im not a good judge coz im not very much of a tau kwa person. More of a tau pok person. haha... and i guess this dish made the 2 guys (kelvin and lionel) lagi sian. They were so depressed the whole night coz they arent allowed to take pictures.

the first item of the set meal was beef carpaccio with pomelo. I think this is my first time having carpaccio so i dun really know how carpaccio is supposed to taste like. The presentation of the item was not bad.. serving is rather small though. Its a thin layer of slices of marinated beef (which kelvin commented its very salty beef) but i found it quite nice topped with pomelo. It was pretty ok.

The second item was the pumpkin crab meat and mint soup. It was... haha.. if u ask me to describe it was pumpkin-ish and minty. Not bad.. pretty interesting i'd say. Jack and Lea's mushroom soup was very very nice in my view though. It may not have those chucks of thick mushrooms bits (think Marche's mushroom soup) and it doesnt exactly look creamy creamy but its very good. I think it came with a layer of white truffle oil. The whole soup is very smooth.

den was the mango and lime sherbet. as i dun really take mango, i tried to enquire if there was any alternative to this. This time, the lady was much nicer though.. she explained this is something by the chef to clear our palate and somehow her whole tone was much nicer and i felt better. The sherbet was not bad actually.. as in i could still take it.

following on is the mains. I was the only one who sticked to the mains which is rigatoni with sausage and mushroom raco. It was not bad in my view.

Jack's steak (cant remember the name) looked small. It had mashed potatoes layered with asparagus on top followed by a round piece of steak. I cannot believe that that would be filling but Jack insisted it is.. haha.. there was some black pieces of things which im not sure what it is on top but gives the steak a rather unique taste. Overall was ok but i think if i ordered that i won't be full.

Lea's cod fish was wonderful! portion was pretty good. I mean usually u koe for cod fish, portions are usually super small but their portion was good. Because i generally feel dat its very hard to go wrong with cod fish (because of the taste and texture of the fish itself), im generally not very impressed by cod fish dishes. However, i think they did a very good job with the cod fish. It tasted very fresh and not oily. There was this green layer of seasoning on the cod thats pretty delightful.

Kelvin and Lionel's Beef wrapped with bacon and blueberries was not bad but it didn't wow. The beef was quite tender and i thot the use of blueberries was quite interesting. The beef took on a rather strong bacon flavour as well. Lionel informed though that the mains took 2 hours before it arrived (2 hours as in from the time we arrived). Haha.. quite a wait but it was overall alright.. (seafoodies, i've made reservations for our feb gathering and i think the waiting time would be just fine for us girls).

Last but not least, its dessert which is milk chocolate and coconut cake gula melaka coulis. It was sheer delight! Lea had raved to me about their old grandma cake (i think dats the name or something close). But i think its coz they change their menu on a periodic basis, that item was not available. This item is quite cool in my view. I mean usually we'd imagine coconut and gula melaka to be more towards an asian flavour and chocolate towards the western side. Chef oscar has managed to put the two together and came up with a pretty divine dessert. The exterior of the cake is rather .. hmm.. im not sure if crispy is the right word but u koe.. when cake is textured on the exterior? This is very very nice!

The lady was also quite friendly and nice towards the end. Overall the bill came up to around $266 for 5 (seafoodies, dun worry, our bill will be much lesser).

Aerin's

We had dinner at Aerin's coz Meixin chose Cityhall and asked me to think of a place. I recalled that Lionel recommended Aerin's before. So we went to try out Aerin's at the basement of Raffles City...

the place was rather packed and we were informed we had to wait awhile to get seats.

The large menu displayed on a stand by the entrance....

the interior of Aerin's by the water fountain area... pretty nice ambience i'd say..

their menu...

i tried to recall what lionel recommended of this place but i can only recall him talking about the pumpkin soup. Tried to call him but he didnt pick up and i realied i forgot to save Kelvin's fone no. into my new fone (argh!).. so in the end we ordered w/o recommendations.

we had the beef goulash ($7)....

its a tomato based soup with some vege, some cubes of beef (which were not tender) and traces of sour cream. Overall, the soup was not bad. But i thot $7 was a bit too expensive.

We also shared a pumpkin soup ($6.50)..

its freshly pureed butternut pumpkin with freshly grated nutmeg. This soup is pretty good... i can understand why Lionel recommended it and Meixin liked it. It has a bit of a sweet taste as well.

For mains, we shared a Risotto Gamberetti ($18)...

Meixin likes risotto and i recommended her the risotto Miss Clarity Cafe. this risotto is classic braised italian arborio rice served with prawns, asparagus and pecorino cheese. I think this risotto is quite nice.. the prawns were fresh and crunchy.. there was also asparagus (i like).. and that green leafy thingy on top? i duno what it is but its got some kinda taste.. somewhat like lemongrass but not lemongrass (i like). goes pretty well with the rice i'd say.

And we also shared a Yakiniku cod ($22)...

a closer up view of the cod....

the cod fillet is baked and marinated with yakiniku sauce and there was baby spinach on top of the pasta. Not saying that this spinach is not good but i cant help but compare it wif the baby spinach i had at Broth. I much prefer Broth's although its not a fair comparison coz its served in different style. But the cod fish was nice (erm... but its very hard to go wrong with cod fish right?).

Desserts wise, we shared a vanilla parfait ($7)...

its frozen vanilla bean parfait served with crunchy pinenuts and mixed berry compote. Well, its ultimately a rich vanilla ice cream with mixed fruits. haha..

warm chocolate pudding ($8)...

the menu wrote.. " oven baked valrhona manjari (64% cacao) chocolate pudding topped with raspberry swirl ice cream ". So .. the 'warm chocolate' has automatically induced our mind to think that its those warm chocolate cake (those dat is available at bakerzinn, mortons and delifrance with chocolate oozing out of a cake) but the word pudding confused me. Pudding is a custard. So we ordered it and it came looking like the typical warm chocolate cake.

Meixin was somewhat enthu looking at me take pictures of the food. She was so funny. She told me that she told her colleagues that tonight her dinner will appear in my food blog tml! hahaha...

So after i took pic of an overall view of this item, i told her to do the honour of opening up the cake so i can take a pic of the chocolate oozing out (we both assumed there would be chocolate oozing out) but we digged and digged......

we realised nothing oozed out. A bit disappointed. Overall it tasted alright but if nothing oozes out, $8 is a bit steep.

Meixin treated for dinner. Thank cute my dear.

Old Mother Hen

Dinner with ah yee and uncle sq.. we went over to try this Old Mother Hen place along Geylang (between geylang lorong 17 and 19). Every time we drove past, their signboard would always amuse me.. its a blue signboard with red chinese words saying Shi Quan Lao Mu Ji Xiao Chi Dian. haha.. so when D blogged about it and gave quite a rave, i thot this place may just be worth a try.

the interior of the place...

a few of their pics displaying celebrity patronage...

the kitchen area....

when the boss saw me taking pics, he came along and presented us with their namecard saying.. " chi le hao chi, jiao peng you lai " (ie. after the meal if u think its good, ask ur friends to come)

I forgot to take a pic of their menu but i think their menu! Nothing sophisticated. Its a plastic folder with photos of all their dishes with clear words and price. Just like Wan Tou Shek Dim Sum's (if u've been there u probably koe wat im toking abt). I like these kinda menu.. they entice me with their menu and i can just flip and point!

Uncle sq and ah yee ordered a luohan longan drink...

was pretty nice and they have quite a substantial amount of longan inside!

we shared a small claypot rice.. pity the lady started mixing before i could take a pic. this is the claypot rice thats already mixed..

has got chinese sausage, chicken and salted egg. so far this is probably the 2nd place i've been with salted egg in their claypot rice. The first is the one at 119 aljunied crescent. The claypot rice was quite nice... u can feel traces of the mashed up salted egg around the rice. Not bad. Costs $5.

Ah yee ordered the fried pig intestine coz it writes zhao pai ie. speciality...

Doesnt quite look like big intestines.. tastes crunchy.. also not bad a dish.

the san wang beancurd....

a closer view...

san wang means egg, salted egg and preserved egg. This dish doesnt quite have much of a taste except its quite spicy. The preserved egg and salted egg's taste was kinda covered by the chilli. Also cant taste the tauhu. But it was not bad in terms of texture.

prawn fritters ($12)....

i rememebered this from D's blog. Reminds me of eating these when we were kids. Somehow the pics from D's blog made the prawn fritters look much bigger. Hmm.. come to think of it.. the prawns in the pic also looks much bigger den what it really is. Initially, ah yee was commenting she doesnt like these kinda prawns coz it usually has got alot of flour... but this one was not ... was alright a dish but probably not a dish that u absolutely gotta order.

the prawn paste chicken....

this item in ah yee's view was not nice. It didnt really have much of a taste.

the soup we ordered was missed out hence it was served much later. The lao mu ji soup..

the chicken .. being lao (old), was as expected not tender or juicy. haha.. soup wise, i thot it was pretty ok .. the herbal soup kinda taste. But ah yee and uncle sq both said its very gao and a bit bitter which i totally couldnt taste. im not sure if its coz my tongue was spiced up by that spicy beancurd and den frizzed out by the coke.

overall the meal was pretty alright. Reasonable pricing. A place where we'd probably bring our parents back to try. Besides, they have quite a comprehensive menu which we'll probably wana be back to try.

Cheng Li Yuan

Our dinner was supposed to be at harbour cafe (meina wanted to intro that place coz its cheap and food is not bad) but we walked past Cheng Li Yuan and this place has been at the back of my mind to try. meina has tried it before and said its pretty good as well so we decided to switch and try cheng li yuan...

Their menu...

the place appears to be operated mainly by china chinese.

We ordered a fried large intestines ($10)..

it was smelly in my view. We tried to feedback it to the lady but right after we commented that, the initally friendly side of her suddenly just disappeared and she got very defensive and her tone totally changed. She appeared angry and said things like this is pig intestine and its supposed to have this taste. They have washed it already and this is what authentic chinese people would eat not like people here. We didnt want to bother arguing with her but seriously i thought she was very rude.

the marinated duck tongue ($8)...

this is probably the first time im having duck tongue. Its pretty good. The flavour is good, the texture is great.

Xiao long bao ($5)...

seriously, i duno if its $5 or did they give us 2 orders of this.. but if its $5 for so many its very worth it (their bill doesnt show a break down in price, this u gotta be careful coz i later checked and i realised they forgot one of our preserved egg and spinach order but we were probably still charged.. but i believe its not done deliberately, probably just an isolated case).

The xiao long bao may look all crumpled but it was full of juices...

skin was rather thin.. the meat was not alot but it was ok. Overall it was pretty alright.

and den Fried Mao's Spicy Pork ($8)...

Meina and Aloy's favourite. I generally dun like sam cham bak. I did try this dish.. was pretty alright. Meina and Aloy quite liked it.

and after reading fatpig's blog, i was craving for this maggot like fried pork coz i had previously had something similiar years ago at Allson Hotel's chinese restaurant (not sure of the name, not sure if its still around either) and i loved it. This item here at Cheng Li Yuan is called Pork with Special Sauce and Popiah Skin ($10)...

you gotta wrap the pork together with the .. hmm.. i duno if its called onion vege.. some cong like vege la... together and wrap it into popiah... i quite like this dish... the cong like vege goes well with the pork.

a close up of the popiah....

next was the fish, dried scallop and egg white ($12). Meina said this item is very good. I remember fatpig also said its really good, better den crystal jade's. The person mixed it with vinegar for us....

a closer up view...

found it pretty alright. I think loh gong zai will like this coz i rem he loved crystal jade's one. But according to meina, the one we had tonight is not as smooth. Overall was alright in my view.

The red bean snow bun ($8) ....

the inside view...

According to meina, many of her colleagues love this as well. They said it melts in their mouth. But not sure if its inconsistency in the standard or if its me. It didnt really taste like i imagined it to be (maybe its me). It was just alright in my view.. didnt find it exceptional. Meina said its quite special. Jianhe and Aloy werent exactly impressed either.

the whole meal came up to about $69. Pricing wise i guess its considered pretty reasonable. Overall a pretty decent meal which i'll wana bring my family back to try.

We were heading over to Broth coz its lil bee's birthday and we ta bao 2 of the red bean snow bun that we couldnt finish over. Jules and lil bee found it pretty good (so maybe its really me.. haha).

The Bar at Mortons

I had a $50 voucher from UOB so Jianhe and i went over to Morton's.

I had a chocolate martini (Jianhe had this the previous time we were there)...

look at all the threads of chocolate....

A closer up view...

it tastes so good! the chocolate melts in ur mouth and the martini tasted a bit like baileys... so yummilious! heh

Jianhe despite being the chocolate lover, wanted to try something new so he ordered the apple martini....

the rim is a layer of cinnamon powder...

it was quite nice as well.. a bit towards the sour side.

and of coz, the free flow fillet mignon sandwiches....

yummy!

and since i had the voucher, we ordered some sides also. I ordered a crab cake to share...

chunks of crab meat....

and the molten chocolate cake.. was describing the chocolate cake to jianhe earlier he the car and being the chocolate lover, he was going crazy at my descriptions. haha

the chocolate cake...

he agreed it was good as well. and we were joking about me being the person who treated him to the most expensive dessert.. $23 for the chocolate cake ok! haha..

Piper's Pie

Lionel got a pie from Piper's Pie. I think its some chicken and white wine sauce flavour...

the fillings inside the pie..

consisted of breast meat which makes me not interested in it. The pie was pretty big. The cream sauce was alright.. but in terms of pie, i kinda prefer don's pie style. Btw, all pies are at $5 after a certain hour (cant rem wat time but we were there around 9 plus).

Chippy's British Takeaway

shared a chippy cheese sausage with Lionel....

i think chippy's sausage are nice and worth it. Sausages these days are getting so expensive! Imagine that normal sized cheese sausage at GV is at $2?! Kill people set fire ahhhhh!! this one at chippy, much thicker, much longer, much nicer and even comes with mashed potato is only $3 plus! Much more worth it i think.

Pivdofr

Dinner with Lionel. He suggested Pvidofr along Liang Seah Street.

we settled for the set dinner which costs $16.50 per person comprising of a drink, a salad, a soup, a mains and a dessert. We also opted for the option of adding half a dozen of escargot at $6 with every set meal (normal price is $8.. i think).

First to arrive was the salad...

nothing really special but the vegetables did look fresh and the thousand island sauce as well. I commented to Lionel that the salad here (though its just very normal salad), tastes much better den Lawry's spinning bowl salad. He luffed and said he will be sure to include it in when he blogs about it. haha..

Next was the corn soup....

the escargots....

my mains which was a Hungarian Beef Goulash (which is some beef stew)....

Lionel's mixed grill comprising of chicken, beef and pork...

Lionel was commenting that the western food he had at some kopitiam looked pretty much like this one.. or way better at a much cheaper price. He was also kinda disappointed with the portion i think. i was looking at his drum and commenting.. " ur drumstick also very small hor ? " .. his answer was so funny! " this is not chicken man.. its pigeon! " hahahhaha

finally, dessert was a raspberry ripple ice cream....

generally, all the items today were ok. Not exceptionable but edible. Portion felt a bit small though so we ended up walking over to Raffles City for finger food (was actually hoping can get a donut from donut factory.. they were closed).

Disney Tea Chocolate Crunch

the Disney tea chocolate crunch Sorina got for me from Hong Kong's Disney Land...

all individually wrapped ....

I'd say i like smelling it den eating it. The tea smell is very fragrant but the chocolate feels as if its not thick enuff. Cant quite put it. But i really appreciate the gift na! *muackz*

Coffee Bean

Dinner with Sorina. We went over to Coffee Bean coz i still had a $10 voucher.

had a ceasar salad with smoked salmon...

coffee bean's ceasar is probably my second favourite ceasar after Basil Alcove's.

We both had the mushroom and chicken fusilli....

not sure why i was under the impression that their cream based fusilli is very nice. It wasnt not nice but not as good as i remembered it to be and i only had a few mouths. Sorina didnt finish hers either.. we probably should have just shared.

Taiwan Delight - Peng Lai Ge

Dinner with ah yee and uncle sq. I suggested going over to Peng Lai Ge.

456 Joo Chiat Road Tel: 64781787 Opening hours: 10.30 am to 10.30 pm

Peng Lai Ge...

the interior of the place...

interestingly, they've got some eel, squid and mackerel canned food on the shelves...

their menu...

After placing our orders, we happened to see a couple of their recommended items on the wall and ....

haha.. we noticed that the cai por neng costs $6.50. Ah yee was saying.. " wah! the cai por neng is $6 ah! " and i replied.. " wah.. its more expensive den my mains.. must be damn good to be able to charge that price "

but we didnt order that. haha.. if u've tried it, leme koe if its nice.

Drinks wise, i ordered the black bricks milk tea (recommended by the owner), uncle sq had the papaya milk tea (also recommended by the owner) and ah yee had the healthy honey vinegar (because we're curious whether its sour or sweet.. haha)...

the black bricks milk tea was pretty good....

Its milk tea and the black bricks tasted like the black cubes that starbucks used to offer but discontinued. I like it for its texture.

uncle sq's papaya milk was also nice. I vaguely remember the other time when i tried it at the bugis outlet, i didnt like it coz it was not cold enuff but this was was chilled and so its good. It tastes rich ... Mmm..

den the healthy honey vinegar, it tastes like sour plum drink. Not bad but the other 2 drinks are nicer.

the very first time i visited Peng Lai Ge @ bugis was mainly coz i wanted to try the smelly beancurd. But during my visit, i was informed that they had to discontinue it as there were complains that it was too smelly. They also informed that their other outlet at Joo Chiat (which is this outlet) still has it! So of coz, smelly beancurd was on my list of orders.....

portion was pretty good!

a closer view...

the inside of the smelly beancurd...

it is noted that we prefer this smelly beancurd to the one we tried at the geylang hk style smelly beancurd. The geylang one was very mashed up inside. This one was pretty good be it in terms of portion or taste!

and of coz, after my previous visits, i know that their crispy chicken is one of the must try!

A closer up view...

As we were digging into this, i commented this is way better den shilin's. Ah yee and uncle sq had in unison replied " of coz! " seriously i cannot understand why so many people likes the shilin's crispy chicken. Peng Lai Ge's crispy chicken is so tender on the inside. The flavouring is also very yummilicious!

ah yee ordered the guo tie....

a closer up view...

The fillings...

im not a guo tie person so im not the right person to judge. I prefer the steamed kind i guess. But ah yee and uncle sq said while this isnt fantastic, its got the basic taste of wat a guo tie should taste like. Also, this dish was actually served to us last (after our mains) so by the time it arrived, we were already super full and realised that we've over-ordered.

Rainy weather these days make me go for soupy stuff quite a bit lately. We shared a crispy sparerib soup....

served after the smelly beancurd, we couldn't really quite tell the taste of the soup. haha ... this soup was also recommended by the owner. he said its very xiang.

for mains, uncle sq had a pork chop fried rice...

one of the more expensive mains ordered today. Think its $6 plus or $8 plus. But portion was rather big. The pork chop tasted a bit like.. hmm... u koe the meat inside bao? To me it tasted like that. Thats why i dun really like it (coz i dun like the taste of meat inside bao). Also comes with the preserved vege.

Ah yee had the oyster mee sua....

a closer view.....

Was pretty nice. Tasty on its own even w/o the vinegar!

and i of coz had the lu rou fan!

I've said this before in my previous entries on Peng Lai Ge. I don't like sam cham bak. But the way they cook their lu rou fan, even though theres sam cham bak, it doesnt taste like sam cham bak. The sauce is very tasty and the meat is so soft and very good to mash with the rice. Thumbs up! Even uncle sq and ah yee agrees! They, like me dont like sam cham bak either.

And the owner who was pretty cute....

Ah yee commented that he looks like the icon of this place...

he really does! haha

L'Angelus

L`angelus along club street....

the interior of the place...

i'd say the interior is quite nicely decorated. Gives a very ang moh feel. I like!

Their menu...

and i was craving for foie gras so....

a closer up view...

on the side.. i dun really koe whats it but i think its some caramelised apple....

that tastes so good! Its sweet and the taste lingers.

the side vege came wif some sour sauce that tastes like vinegar which was also really good.

the foie gras...

portion was ok but it was not easy to cut it into pieces hence while i dun think its lousy, i think it can be better. It did satisfy my cravin for foie gras though.

For mains, i had a roasted chicken in morel cream sauce with pasta. The server pushed out this side table and served the chicken from there...

the roasted chicken in moral cream sauce with pasta....

a close up of the chicken....

the shell shaped pasta...

and this mushroom like thingy... never quite saw anything like this...

and the other half of the roast chicken in the pot...

This dish, in my view is pretty awesome! The pasta might be considered saltish for some but it suits my palate perfectly! Coupled with the taste of the sauce which had a chicken broth taste, it was sheer divine! The chicken was quite tender though i think the main emphasis of this dish should be in the sauce. Its so good! The weird mushroom like thingy was also quite nice! I was so full i couldnt finish the chicken but its super duper good in my view!
